Starting in the days of FERA and through the advent of FEMA in 1999, delivering consistently on the knowledge accumulated over the years as the compliance landscape has been tightened and changed, this specialisation in a niche area remains of immense value to clients.

About the FEMA consultant

P. Venkatesan, CA, CISA, is a Chartered Accountant who has been in practice in Chennai for about 49 years. FERA, followed by FEMA in 1999, is the niche area in which he has been specialising over the last 30 years or so, rendering consultancy and services to foreign and Indian clients - individuals, firms and corporates, including multinationals

The journey since 1977

1977-2015

Senior partner, P. Venkatesan & Co.

From the commencement of practice in 1977, Venkatesan was the senior partner in P. Venkatesan & Co., a member of P. Venkatesan Affiliates - a network of CA firms registered with the ICAI, headquartered in Madras / Chennai, with offices in Salem and Trivandrum. Though a small firm, it carried a wide range of professional work: statutory audits in the private sector, a place on the CAG's panel for audit of government companies including the Division Audit of LIC, and standing on the RBI's panel for statutory branch audits alongside empanelment with several banks for stock audits, revenue audits, credit audits, special valuation assignments and branch inspections. The firm also practised income tax for individuals, firms, trusts and companies, as well as company law matters.

1995-2010

Rewarding referral practice from CA Collegues

Several chartered accountants and CA firms based in Chennai and across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra have regularly referred their clients' FEMA matters to him for expert, proactive resolution.

Venkatesan served as the FEMA partner in a medium-sized chartered accountancy firm.
2020-present

Independent FEMA Consultant

Venkatesan continues to practise as an independent FEMA consultant, rendering opinions on FEMA and international taxation issues; providing FEMA-related services and representations before AD banks, the RBI, the Compounding Authorities of the RBI, as well as the Enforcement Directorate.

Book Publication

In 2012, Venkatesan wrote the book External Commercial Borrowings - A Practitioner's Guide, published by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).
